India 89 for 1 against New Zealand in 12.5 overs (Gill 45*, Suryakumar 34*, Henry 1-20); no score
Rain prevailed after a day of stop-start play, wiping out the Hamilton ODI after only 12.5 overs. Before the second rain delay of the day ended any chance of further play, Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill amused during an unbroken 66-run stand off 46 deliveries. Suryakumar Yadav scored 34 off 25 balls and Shubman Gill scored 45 off 42.
The toss had already been delayed by 15 minutes due to cloudy skies when Kane Williamson chose to bowl India at Seddon Park. Within the first three overs of their innings, as Shikhar Dhawan got off to another slow start, a drizzle started, and by the fifth over, when Gill had already hit two boundaries, it became heavier. India was down 22 but still in the game when the referees called the players off the field.
It was 2.53 pm at the time, and the game had been cut down to 29 overs per side due to intermittent rain. Dhawan immediately after the restart made his intentions known by charging down to Tim Southee, only to fall the very next ball when he mishandled a loft off Matt Henry to mid-on.
In the eighth over, Gill hit Henry for a six over fine leg while promoted Suryakumar struggled to get going, scoring only five runs off his first 11 balls. On the final delivery of the ninth over, when he ramped Lockie Ferguson, he quickened his tempo. Gill lofted Michael Bracewell, Williamson's addition of spin in the following over, over cover. When Mitchell Santner entered the game in the eleventh, Suryakumar hit his first six by slog-sweeping the left-arm spinner over deep square leg.
He then hit Ferguson over midwicket and reverse-swatted Bracewell over backward point for the first of three sixes. Suryakumar chipped Ferguson for four behind the wicket off what turned out to be the final ball of the game.
At 7:21 o'clock in the evening, play was halted, and 45 minutes later, the game was over.
As a result of the washout, the teams split the points, with New Zealand leading 1-0 going into Wednesday's third ODI in Christchurch.
